Born an Iowa farm girl Johnna received Applied Arts Degree in 1977 from Hawkeye Institute of Technology, worked for an ad agency for 7 years and became a commercial art free-lancer in 1978.

Johnna has a wide art background. Having an applied arts degree led her to support many illustrations styles including watercolor, colored pencil, air brush, pen and ink, calligraphy, and pastels. As a commercial artist in search of a style all her own, she developed paper sculpture into a white on white style. Self-taught in this medium, she has won many awards. Book publishers became interested which stirred questions from readers on techniques and supplies.
